Xuancheng
The Romance of the Three KingdomsXuancheng is the setting of a sudden night raid that tests Zhou Tai’s loyalty to Sun Quan and draws Sun Ce into a swift punitive campaign. In the episode, the city’s vulnerability turns a local attack into a family and military crisis: Zhou Tai saves Sun Quan, and Sun Ce answers by destroying the raiders before resuming the consolidation of his power.
Setting and Strategic Context
While Sun Ce’s army campaigns farther south, Sun Quan and his companion Zhou Tai are assigned to guard Xuancheng. Their separation from Sun Ce’s main force leaves them exposed when mountain robbers attack without warning in the middle of the night. The account presents the raid as a sudden blow against a guarded position, rather than as part of Sun Ce’s planned advance.
The episode links the security of Xuancheng to the wider contest for power in the south. Sun Ce is extending his control over key places while confronting rivals and disorder; the attack at Xuancheng shows how vulnerable that effort remains to armed groups operating beyond the reach of his main army.
The Raid and Zhou Tai’s Rescue
The attack catches Zhou Tai unprepared: he is in bed when he hears the fighting and has no time to dress. He nevertheless enters the action and rescues Sun Quan. The narrative makes the contrast between the suddenness of the danger and Zhou Tai’s immediate response the defining feature of the incident; his conduct protects Sun Ce’s brother and companion at a moment when the guard post is under threat.
Zhou Tai is brought to Sun Ce’s camp in a grave condition. Sun Ce’s concern leads him to seek the best available doctor, and Hua Tuo is recommended. After examining Zhou Tai, Hua Tuo judges the case manageable and treats him with herbal remedies and medicines. Zhou Tai recovers within a month, turning a near-fatal setback into a demonstrated act of care by Sun Ce and a recovery credited to Hua Tuo’s expertise.
Sun Ce’s Response and Aftermath
Enraged by the attack on Sun Quan and Zhou Tai, Sun Ce sets out to destroy the mountain robbers. The account describes the campaign as swift and successful: he eradicates the bandits, answering a threat to his family and command with direct military action.
After this punishment, Sun Ce returns to the broader work of strengthening his position. He consolidates control of important places, reports his victories to the court, makes contact with Cao Cao, and demands that Yuan Shu return the Imperial Seal. The Xuancheng raid is thus a contained episode with wider consequences for the narrative: it displays Zhou Tai’s loyalty, Sun Ce’s forceful protection of his circle, and the continuing security challenges accompanying his expansion.
